This is a great trick that you can use to fool your mates.
The secret is red cabbage!

Chop up some red cabbage into a bowl.
Pour on some hot water. It'll turn purple straightaway. This is your "blackcurrant juice"!

Red cabbage water has an unusual quality – it changes colour when it's mixed with anything acidic, or alkaline.

|
Perform the trick by mixing up a glass of water with some bicarbonate of soda.
|
 |
|
When you add "blackcurrant juice" to "water", a chemical reaction takes place which turns the "water" into "blueberry juice"!
|
 |
|
If you add some clear vinegar (which you can tell your mates is water) to the "blueberry juice", it turns pink – into "raspberry juice"!
|
 |
|
It's a good trick – but not such a good drink – so don't drink it!
